経済学科の概要メインビジュアル

The Department of Economics aims to nurture skills to analyze and understand complex economic mechanisms.

The future will increasingly demand a workforce capable of understanding and analyzing various aspects of the economy, including the analysis and practical study of market economics; public policies and issues related to welfare; advanced financial systems; various forms of information and data; an economic system as determined by laws and regulations; the effects of a globalized economy on various parts of the world; and the economic changes that have occurred across time and place.

Such skills are cultivated by both a broad and a cutting-edge specialized education and will be indispensable for pursuing a practical career path in accordance with the level of acquired skills.

The Department of Economics offers a well-developed basic education plus a curriculum of three specialized courses of study with the aim of delivering effective personal education centered on economics.

Corporate and System Design Course

The learning objective of this course is to understand economic mechanisms based on the structure of actual corporations and organizations.

Policy Analysis
Course

Students gain a firm grasp of economic theories and empirical analysis, and, based on an understanding the economic system, analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the effectiveness of fiscal and financial policies.

Since elements of production such as capital, labor and land are scarce resources, they must be utilized efficiently in order to enhance social welfare.

When market mechanisms do not function properly and resources are not allocated optimally, where such allocation is left soley to the market, the role of government become essential.

This is why we adopt an analytical method of statistics and econometrics using data to verify the effectiveness of policies. Many of our students choose to work for financial institutions after graduation.

However, those students who wish to pass the Japanese civil service examinations, examinations for various qualifications such as tax accountant, certified public accountant, securities analyst and financial planner, or who are interested in studying abroad are advised to develop solid knowledge on economics.

The ability to accurately process economic and financial data has been in high demand, as evidenced by the increased use of buzzwords “fintech” and “big data” in recent years.

Career paths as economists or data scientists utilizing econometrics will open up in the future.

Global Studies
Course

In this course, you are expected to attain practical analytical skills and the ability to respond to situations by learning about the economic realities of various parts of the world at different times in history.

The objective of the course is to nurture internationally-minded personnel with superior communication skills, capable of proactively engaging in the tackling and resolving of real global economic problems.

For such purposes, students will approach actual issues, develop analytical and practical skills, and develop their own humanity as they engage in practical, experience-based learning through case studies and field studies.

The combination of language studies and a wide array of specialized subjects offered in the curriculum provides a broad yet comprehensive study of economics.

The course offers students who are interested in working for a global enterprise or a trading company, incorporated entity, international organization, NGO/NPO, media outlet or as a journalist, as well as those who wish to work in the global arena opportunities to develop their skills by utilizing information and communications equipment.

There is also a path for continuing studies at an overseas graduate school for those considering becoming an international public servant in the future.

Ideal student

The Department of Economics has taken measures to review its specialized economics education and methods for many years in order to respond to society’s needs for personnel development. The new curriculum introduced in 2014 has been designed in line with the studies and career paths of actual students while incorporating cutting-edge economic research based on insights gained through the course of our past engagements.

As an example, the Department of Economics introduced new subjects in 2018 to complement the solid framework of traditional economics underpinned by rational choice theory: Experimental Economics and Behavioral Economics.

These fields focus on clarifying economic phenomena that cannot be explained by conventional economics through the adoption new approaches.

During the process of taking entrance examinations for universities, you may not be able to pay attention to the contents of university education and subsequent career paths as you are inclined to focus on more centralized information. However, we suggest you stop and think again from the standpoint of what you want to study at university and what career you would like to pursue as you choose your university, faculty and department. Our new curriculum makes it possible to adopt a wide range of career paths based on the three distinct courses.

The curriculum is designed to open doors to future career paths for students with distinct interests and put them on the right direction so that they will not get lost along the way, including those students who wish to focus on studies aimed at examinations for specific qualifications, those who are interested in working in finance, those who wish to pursue an international career with opportunities to travel around the world, those who wish to advance in their career in the corporate sector by leveraging their field of specialization, and those who prefer to reexamine their aptitude after studying economics in general.

We hope that enthusiastic students who wish to attain value-added skills at university will join this department to pursue and fulfill their career goals.
