In the Matsuzono seminar this year, there are 16 students in the third grade and 2 students, plus one auditor, in the fourth grade. This year, we, the third grade, have the largest seminar class in the history of the Matsuzono seminar. The third grade consists solely of students from the Department of International Business, while the fourth grade includes two members from the same department and an auditor from the Department of Business Administration. Occasionally, we welcome former students as guests who assist us in studying English and share their seminar experiences with Professor Matsuzono. This demonstrates how students consider the Matsuzono seminar to be valuable and meaningful.
学習内容
What we aim to improve in our seminar class is the ability to deliver effective presentations in English. All the classes are conducted solely in English, and we are only allowed to use English during the sessions.
Our topic is “public speaking,” and in each session, we work together towards the shared goal of becoming proficient English public speakers. Professor Matsuzono invests a significant amount of time and effort into developing class content, including presentation slides, homework assignments, reviewing our work, providing feedback, and observing our progress. He strives to provide us with ample opportunities for improvement.
In our case, regardless of the number of students, each of us receives four presentation opportunities during the first semester. Additionally, we have been assigned two essay writing tasks. As you can imagine, this seminar is quite challenging. We are required to speak English at all times, have numerous homework assignments, give multiple presentations, and face a demanding professor. However, students attend every class and diligently follow the professor’s lessons because we all believe that this seminar can significantly enhance our English skills, particularly in making presentations and delivering speeches.

The name of our professor is Yasunori Matsuzono. Professor Matsuzono became a university professor after working for several years in a general Japanese company. He has teaching experience at the University of Tokyo and other prestigious institutions, and he also continues to teach at other universities. With a master’s degree obtained in England, his English skills are remarkably impressive, demonstrated by his extensive vocabulary and accurate grammar. These are the basic details about his English-related background, but I would like to share more fascinating information about Professor Matsuzono.
To be honest, I didn’t choose to join this seminar class solely to improve my English skills. While improving my English was certainly one of my motivations, my greater motivation was Professor Matsuzono’s personality. As mentioned earlier, he is incredibly enthusiastic and dedicated to teaching English, and I questioned why he invests so much time and effort into his students. It took some time for me to understand, but after interacting with him, I realized that he genuinely wants his students to improve and experiences genuine happiness when he sees their progress. This is why he is willing to invest so much time and effort and be demanding of his students.
Another significant factor, and actually the most important one that attracted me to this seminar, is the relationship between Professor Matsuzono and his students. Fortunately, before deciding to join this seminar, I had the opportunity to interact with former seminar students and Professor Matsuzono. I attended their classes and also joined them for informal gatherings. What I witnessed was not just a typical student-professor interaction, but rather an interaction among friends. Students were joking with him, laughing together, and, most importantly, speaking honestly with him. Moreover, it wasn’t just the students who were honest, but Professor Matsuzono as well.
What fascinated me the most was the “trust” that existed between everyone, which went beyond the typical student-professor dynamic. I believe there are not many professors who are as enthusiastic about teaching and as committed to building genuine relationships with their students. As I have been emphasizing, Professor Matsuzono’s teaching approach and his dedication to fostering true connections with students are unimaginable without experiencing them firsthand, and I firmly believe that they are truly worth witnessing for yourself.

Our seminar generally has a bright atmosphere, where people are happy and friendly. However, there are moments when an atmosphere emerges where individuals tend to hold back their energy and opt for the easier path. As a leader, I am currently working on changing this dynamic into a consistently positive atmosphere, where students can give their best and make continuous efforts.

The main advantage of this seminar is undoubtedly the opportunity for students to enhance their English skills, particularly in terms of public speaking. As mentioned earlier, we have several opportunities to deliver presentations in front of our peers, as well as engage in English conversations during class. These opportunities, coupled with our professor’s enthusiasm and guidance, make it almost impossible not to improve one’s English skills.

Observing the job destinations of our seniors, we find that they are working across a wide range of industries, including IT, advertising, visual arts, entertainment, logistics, travel, apparel, food, automobiles, consulting, architecture & interior design, and more.
In this seminar, you will have the opportunity to develop not only your English skills but also various other abilities, such as quick responsiveness, the ability to infer meaning from others’ speech, and teamwork skills through presentations and discussions.
