Report from Student 3,Hawaii, 2025

I was very happy to be able to actually participate in the field study that I had wanted to join since I first entered university. While there, I had the opportunity to learn about Hawaii’s environmental issues and culture together with students from other universities in Japan. Although Hawaii is a resort destination and its bright aspects are what people mostly see on the surface, I felt that there are actually many underlying issues, such as the history of Japanese immigrants and environmental conservation challenges at tourist sites like Hanauma Bay.The final presentation was difficult because we had to prepare it during our stay and present it in English, but being able to deepen the research we had done in Japan by studying it further on-site was one of the best parts of this program. Since it was my first time visiting Hawaii, I was also happy that I could visit famous tourist spots and enjoy the local food. I had never eaten it in Japan before, but the acai bowl was so delicious that I became hooked on it! It was also my first time staying abroad for two weeks, so at first I was very nervous. However, the two weeks were so fulfilling that before I knew it, it was already time to return to Japan. Thanks to the professors at the University of Hawaii, Professor Omura who accompanied us, and everyone else who was involved, I was able to have experiences and learning opportunities that I would never have had if I had stayed in Japan. Thank you very much. These two weeks were one of the most memorable and intense experiences of my life, so if you are unsure about participating, I personally highly recommend that you do!
