Living in Hawaii for the first time for two weeks provided me with new experiences and discoveries, and interacting with local people was a very valuable experience. In my case study class in the spring semester, we researched environmental issues occurring in Hawaii based on a chosen theme. I learned that Hawaii faces a variety of problems, including coral bleaching and microplastics. I also went to Hawaii and listened to various stories from local people about the current issues and efforts being made, and I feel that this experience has further deepened my interest and understanding. I realized the importance of not only researching in Japan, but also going to Hawaii and conducting research on the ground. One thing that made a particularly strong impression on me was my visit to Hanauma Bay. The view of Hanauma Bay from above was spectacular, something you would never see in Japan. Listening to local staff members, I learned about the history and current measures being taken, and learned that it is something that has been made possible through hard work, which deepened my interest.
