I participated in field study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa from February 10th to 23rd. Life on the big campus surrounded by nature was very exciting and different from my usual life at Shirokane Campus. I stayed at a dormitory called “Lincoln Hall.” Every morning, I woke up to the sound of birds singing. It was a perfect Hawaii morning.
In this program, I learned about Hawaii through both lectures and fieldwork. I especially enjoyed the lectures on environmental issues by Dr. Burkart and Dr. Tarui. Their talks were very useful for my study about “stable supply of solar power.” I am very grateful to the teachers for answering my many questions so kindly.
During fieldwork, I went snorkeling at Hanauma Bay and visited a Fishpond. These activities helped me understand the importance of protecting nature. I also learned about the history of Japanese people in Hawaii. It was a great chance to see Hawaii from many different points of view.
After the lectures, we took a bus to Waikiki to see the beautiful sunset. We also went shopping at local supermarkets. I enjoyed Hawaiian food like Poke and Malasadas. They were delicious! On the last day, we had a dinner party with our teachers at an Italian restaurant and had a wonderful time together.
Also, I served as a leader during this program. Thanks to my team members’ help, everything went smoothly without any big problems. Through this experience, I learned how important teamwork is.
Finally, I want to thank the teachers at the University of Hawaii, my fellow members, and my family for supporting me. I will use this great experience for my future studies and growth.
